Working with the Full Moon Eclipse in Pisces
In just a few hours, the Sun and the Moon will be opposite one another with the Earth in between. The Moon, the Sun and the Earth will all occupy roughly the same plane, with the Earth passing in between the two luminaries, creating a Full Moon, or lunar, eclipse. Energetically, these times can be chaotic and emotional. They invite change. The bring about endings.
This particular eclipse is occurring with the Moon in Pisces and the Sun in Virgo. Let’s explore what that might mean, using the cards of the Major Arcana as indicators:
The Moon - Since this is a lunar eclipse, the Moon is the big actor in this one. The Moon in the Tarot corresponds to the High Priestess, a card of intuition, divination, and secrets. The High Priestess is the Oracle of the Major Arcana, a good time to be exploring work with the Tarot.
Pisces - The Moon is in Pisces during this eclipse and, wouldn’t you know it, the Major Arcana card that corresponds with Pisces is… The Moon! In the Major Arcana, the Moon is a card of our emotional ebbs and flows and our hidden dreams and fears. There is an innate link between the High Priestess and The Moon so it is particularly powerful that this connection also exists with this eclipse.
The Sun - Unlike the Moon card’s correspondence to Pisces, the Sun card makes the obvious connection. The Sun card corresponds to the Sun. The Sun card is the card of our true radiant self. It’s where we find our vitality, our success, and our self-expression.
Virgo - The Hermit is the card that corresponds with Virgo, the position of the Sun in the sky right now. The Hermit in the Tarot is home to our seeker of inner truth. It is where we isolate for introspection by using our inner light.
Our ‘Sun’ self is thrown for a bit of loop during eclipse season. Where is our light? It isn’t as visible as it should be. This energy is likely to cause a lack of clarity, as the Sun and the Moon vie for celestial space from opposite sides of the cosmos. During this particular eclipse, with the Hermit (Virgo) and The Moon (Pisces) cards, we are likely to seek solace within and explore our darker side.
This might be a great time to work with these energies via a Tarot spread.
Try this five-card spread out, appropriate since fives are a number that often represents change in the Tarot.
Remove The High Priestess, The Sun, The Moon, and The Hermit from your Tarot deck. Place them in a rough circle with the High Priestess at the 12 o’clock position; followed by The Sun, The Moon, and The Hermit. Leave a blank space for the fifth card in between The hermit and The Sun. Use the picture here to guide you.
Full Moon Eclipse in Pisces 5-card Spread
Shuffle/Mix the remaining cards in your deck and draw five cards. Place the first card on top of the High Priestess. This card will represent that which is yet unseen. Place the second card on top of The Sun. This card represents where you need to focus your light and energy. Place the third on top of The Moon. This card will focus on an aspect of your ‘dream life’. Place the fourth card on top of The Hermit. This card represents where you need to retreat from in your real life. Place the fifth card in the empty space in between The Hermit and The High Priestess. This card will help you focus on what needs to change.
Use the following questions as your guide.
The High Priestess: What might be sitting in the shadows? Use this card to explore what energy is as yet unseen or unnoticed.
The Sun: Where do I need to shine my true light? Use this card as an area in which to focus your energy.
The Moon: What area of my ‘dream life’ do I need to move towards? Pisces brings out the dreamer in us.
The Hermit: What area of my ‘real life’ do I need to pull back from?
The Eclipse - What needs to change?
